What people say about UTMC: say
Rick has been transplanted at the University of Toledo Medical Center! The care here is awesome. The average wait here is three months according to Toledo's team. It took a very, very long time to be listed here, but once you’re listed it is very fast. Once we were listed, the medical team encouraged us to come to Toledo and get an Airbnb and just wait here. That’s a financial risk, but it was worth it. On the day of the actual surgery, we had to be at the hospital in an hour. They’re very quick to cancel the surgery if everything is not just right. I’m so grateful we found your website and services. My cousin used you years ago and he told us about you.

The University of Toledo Medical Center gave me my life back. After my first kidney transplant began to fail, I turned to UTMC in the summer of 2024. I had endured multiple hypertensive crises and ineffective treatments elsewhere. The UTMC team dug deeper and found the true cause; and provided a cure that fully healed my condition.Just six months after joining the transplant list at UTMC, I received a second kidney—despite having antibodies against many donor organs. The results have been extraordinary, I feel better than I have in years. The physicians, nurses, and staff at UTMC are outstanding. I recommend them without hesitation.

Thank you for this wonderful resource for our patients. I saw a patient today who came to us after looking at this website.
My husband ended up getting a call from the University of Toledo and got transplanted in September 2019! This has been truly a miracle and a tremendous relief for him.

High Cadaveric Transplants Volume. For highly sensitized patients (high cPRA) and those with blood type B or O, high cadaveric transplant volume is especially important. More volume means more potential matches—crucial for rare blood types and for patients with many antibodies who are hard to match. In 2020, following the implementation of the Execute Order aimed at increasing kidney availability, cadaveric transplant volume rose substantially. For the transplant centers served by Ohio's Organ Procurement Organizations, the number of cadaveric kidneys recovered and allocated to Toledo nearly doubled—from approximately 100 to 200 per year.

-
High surgery cancellation rate. This transplant program cancels or postpones transplant surgeries more often than at other hospitals, many patients ultimately appreciate the team’s thorough safety checks and commitment to the best possible outcome.
-
Expertise beyond transplant surgeries. Patients say they received successful treatment here after ineffective care at other hospitals.
-
The UTMC team is very experienced in supporting out-of-state patients and offers practical guidance on lodging and transportation.Because shorter warm ischemia time improves transplant outcomes, patients coming from out of town are usually advised to stay close to the hospital.

While cadaveric transplant volume is high, the living donor volume is low. If you have a potential living donor who is not compatable to you and you need to enter a paired living donor exchange, nearby center with high living donor transplant volume, such as Ohio State University Medical Center would be a better fit. The University of Toledo Medical Center, despite low living donor volume currently, has been at forefront of the living donor kidney exchange initiatives as early as 2015.
