Over the past decade, NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center has made significant strides in reducing its kidney transplant waiting list, decreasing from approximately 1,400 patients in 2014 to under 600 in 2024. However, this reduction has been primarily due to patients being removed from the list as their health deteriorated during the prolonged wait. Despite performing an average of 100 cadaveric kidney transplants and nearly 100 living donor transplants annually, the waiting list continues to exceed the number of deceased donor kidneys provided to the center by designated Organ Procurement Organizations.
