Lehigh Valley Hospital has substantially increased its deceased-donor kidney transplant volume in recent years. The program makes broad use of available organ offers, supported by an experienced transplant team and a willingness to consider a wider range of medically suitable donor kidneys.
This growth occurred while major changes in kidney allocation and organ sharing were underway. These changes have made deceased-donor kidneys available beyond the usual local OPO boundaries.
Lehigh Valley Hospital achieved a reduction in its kidney transplant waiting list from approximately 400 patients in 2018 to 250 in 2023. This improvement was primarily attributable to a significant increase in cadaveric kidney transplant volume.
