For patients without a living donor, demand at Geisinger is high relative to the number of deceased donor transplants performed each year. Approximately 300 patients are on the kidney waiting list, although about half are currently inactive, while the center performs under 40 deceased-donor kidney transplants annually.
In recent years, the number of candidates who died or became too sick for transplant while waiting has been comparable to the number who received a deceased-donor kidney.
Recent data also show an increase in candidates who ultimately received their transplant at another center.
Over the past decade, Geisinger Medical Center has maintained a kidney transplant waiting list ranging from approximately 200 to 400 patients. Despite performing an average of fewer than 40 cadaveric kidney transplants annually, the center's transplant volume has not kept pace with the demand. In 2024, only 14% of waitlisted patients received a cadaveric transplant.
