Over the past decade, SUNY Downstate Medical Center has made significant strides in reducing its kidney transplant waiting list, decreasing from approximately 500 patients in 2014 to under 250 in 2024. However, this reduction has been primarily due to patients being removed from the list as their health deteriorated during the prolonged wait. With an average of 50 cadaveric kidney transplants performed annually, the center's transplant volume does not match the demand of the waiting list.
