Allegheny General Hospital Kidney Transplant: Wait Times & Patient Data

Allegheny General Hospital shares the Pittsburgh transplant market with UPMC, one of the country's best-known transplant programs. However, reputation and program size do not necessarily translate into a shorter wait for a deceased-donor kidney.

In recent years, UPMC has carried a substantially larger kidney waiting list than Allegheny General Hospital. Because the two programs serve the same general geographic area, the difference in waiting-list demand can make AGH an important alternative for patients considering where to list in western Pennsylvania.

Allegheny General Hospital and UPMC have a longstanding competitive relationship in Pittsburgh. That competition has extended to transplantation; for example, when UPMC temporarily suspended transplant operations in 2015, AGH saw a sharp increase in transplant referrals and kidney procedures, which the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette explicitly described in terms of the rival programs.

In 2026 Allegheny General Hospital became the first program in the region to perform a robotic-assisted kidney transplant in a recipient, and AHN says it is currently the only western Pennsylvania transplant center performing both donor and recipient procedures robotically.
